I feel like Macneal captured it extremely well and painted a good picture for someone who may not know a lot about that time period.įor me, the beginning was quite slow, yet the ending is extremely fast-paced. The struggles Iris and other women were going through during the 1800s, were very interesting to read.

I didn’t expect her to be such a down to earth care-free character (towards the beginning) and ended up loving her character. She is a very strong female character, and she kind of surprised me. She will model for him if he teaches her to paint. This prevents her from living the normal happy life that she desires, with the additional pain of constant belittlement from her family and Mrs Slater.Īfter meeting Louis Frost, the pre-Raphaelite painter, she can’t help herself but strike a deal with him. Due to a birth defect, Iris’ collar bone is permanently damaged. And Silas, the owner of an antiques and cadaver shop, who only has eyes for Iris. Iris, who with her sister is trapped painting dolls in Mrs Slater’s doll shop. Set in London in the 1850s, we meet the two protagonists. Even though I did get a bit behind at the beginning, I caught up and loved talking about each section each week. I can’t stress enough how much more I enjoyed reading this book because of the buddy read. I did enjoy this book, but I also had a few issues with it. This is one of the first historical fiction books I’ve read in a while. I have to start with…I still have no idea how to write this review. Suddenly her world begins to expand, to become a place of art and love.īut Silas has only thought of one thing since their meeting, and his obsession is darkening.

When Iris is asked to model for pre-Raphaelite artist Louis Frost, she agrees on the condition that he will also teach her to paint.

For Iris, an aspiring artist, it is the encounter of a moment – forgotten seconds later, but for Silas, a collector entranced by the strange and beautiful, that meeting marks a new beginning. The Great Exhibition is being erected in Hyde Park and among the crowd watching the spectacle two people meet. It was chosen as the book for my first buddy read though and I was so happy that I finally got to read it! Goodreads Synopsis I have been wanting to read The Doll Factory book for a while, but never ended up picking it up when I went out.
